You may recall hearing about Invisalign® some years ago, with major celebrities like Eva Longoria or Tom Cruise singing its praises. In recent years, Invisalign® treatment has become increasingly known and increasingly available to dental patients who want to straighten their smile. Whether you’ve heard about the treatment or not, one thing is certain: Invisalign® isn’t just for the rich and famous anymore!
What is Invisalign® Treatment?
Invisalign® Treatment is the revolutionary way to correct misaligned teeth with minimal visual detectability. In contrast with its more traditionally offered metal bracing system, Invisalign® aligners are nearly invisible!
The Invisalign® system is comprised of an assessment stage, a production stage and a correction stage. The assessment stage begins with your dentist taking three-dimensional images of your teeth. This important step has the dual function of allowing your dentist to view your teeth and root systems from every angle, and to allow a simulated representation of hypothetical results to be digitally constructed and reviewed.
Once your simulation has been developed and you’ve agreed to go ahead with Invisalign® treatment, your three-dimensional images will be sent to an Invisalign® laboratory to be used in constructing your customized Invisalign® aligners.
The final stage, the corrective stage, takes place the first day that you place your first Invisalign® aligners into your dental arches, and continues until you have worn each aligner in prescribed succession. The correction stage is complete when your smile has been corrected and your new smile is ready to be shown off!
Who Is Invisalign® Intended For?
Invisalign® aligners are intended for use with patients who present with mild to moderate corrective needs. For advanced corrective needs, traditional braces may be recommended. We suggest starting a dialogue with us at your next regular appointment so that we can fully outline the potential for your teeth and what method will be most suitable to get you there.
Invisalign® aligners are intended to be worn in dental arches that are fully developed, so your dentist may recommend waiting several years to ensure that your teeth and jaw are fully developed if you are inquiring about aligners in your adolescent years.
Although Invisalign® aligners are unobtrusive, they do require an excellent oral hygiene habit to be maintained throughout the treatment. The aligners are worn over the teeth, which can trap and retain food debris and harmful bacteria, increasing the potential for decay and gingivitis over time. As a result, patients showing interest in Invisalign® treatment should first demonstrate a proven oral hygiene habit consisting of regular brushing and flossing. Patients who suffer from gingivitis or tooth decay should have both remedied before considering a course of Invisalign® treatment.
The nature of Invisalign® aligners’ transparency makes them easy to lose or misplace when the aligners are removed for eating and cleaning. Patients undertaking Invisalign® treatment should be cautious to avoid their loss, as each aligner must be worn in sequence in order to minimize discomfort and maximize the outcome of the treatment.
Invisalign Clear Aligners are removable for easy cleaning and for instances you may need to wear sport mouth guards.
Custom Fit Aligners
Invisalign aligners are custom fit for each individual based on the requirements of the treatment.
How to Wear Invisalign® Aligners
You will visit our clinic to collect your custom aligners, and to receive customized instruction about how long to wear each aligner before moving on to the next tray. Invisalign® aligners are numerous, typically requiring between 20 and 30 separate aligners to complete a course of treatment.
The aligners should be worn a minimum of 22 hours out of every day and should be removed only while eating or cleaning the teeth. As a result, many Invisalign® patients enjoy the added benefit of improved oral health with brushing and flossing after every meal. Removing the appliance and cleaning the teeth after eating or drinking anything other than water typically has patients choosing to drink more water over sugary drinks, and less snacking outside of meal times.
Traditional braces have required abstaining from foods that have the potential to become trapped between the teeth or in the brackets. Additionally, biting into foods has been a no-no for our patients with braces, as it puts excessive pressure on the brackets and can dislodge the bracket from the tooth. Thanks to Invisalign® treatment, our patients are now able to continue to eat a varied diet, and they can bite into apples the way they always have without worrying about harming their braces. What’s more, Invisalign® wearers have said ‘goodbye’ to the arduous job of trying to clean teeth effectively despite the presence of metal braces. With Invisalign®, you can brush and floss your teeth the same way you have always done, without any concern about harming the appliance – simply replace when cleaning is complete!
Other Benefits of Invisalign® Treatment
The ‘invisibility’ of Invisalign® aligners is the primary feature of their unique design, but there are benefits outside of the appearance of the appliance as well. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign® aligners do not use any metal brackets to maintain tooth position. As a result, patients are relieved of the potential for hard-to-manage soft tissue irritation that can occur when cheek tissue meets these unforgiving metal brackets. The result is a comfortable-fitting appliance that is minimally visible, and comfortable to wear.
